KABUL, July 2 (IANS) The United States has confirmed talks with a high-level Taliban delegation in Doha about freeing Afghanistan’s foreign reserves, media reports said.

As the Taliban government seeks to acquire The Afghanistan Bank (DAB) assets, the Joe Biden administration wants assurances that the money will be spent helping the Afghan people, Pazcock News reported.

The State Department says the United States has renewed its commitment of 55 million in new aid to earthquake survivors in Afghanistan.

A statement from the State Department said: “The two sides have discussed in detail the US move to save $ 3.5 billion in the Afghan central bank’s reserves for the benefit of the Afghan people.”

It added: “The United States mourns the loss of life and suffering in Afghanistan as a result of the recent earthquake.”

The two-day meeting was led by a US delegation led by Thomas West, Afghanistan’s special envoy to Afghanistan.

The Afghan delegation, led by Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki, included senior DAB and senior finance ministry officials.

“Muttaki has highlighted the positive changes since the new government came to power, calling the security situation in Afghanistan exemplary,” a foreign ministry spokesman tweeted.

He also praised the transparent distribution of humanitarian aid in western Afghanistan.

“The United States supports the Afghan people’s demand that girls be allowed to return to school and that women be allowed to work, contribute to the country’s economic growth and express themselves freely,” the statement concluded.
