Travel chaos not down to us, says airlines boss | Travel News | Travel

Millions of passengers have faced last-minute heartbreak this year, with 17,000 flights canceled less than 72 hours before departure.

Long queues and ax flights due to staff shortages are set to get worse as schools begin to break this week.

But Airlines UK, the body which represents the carriers, told BBC Panorama tonight that the chaos was not the result of poor planning or decision-making.

Rob Griggs, director of policy and public affairs, said: “I don’t think the wrong decision was made.”

“Of course, on a practical day, different things can probably be done in different places.”

Some in the industry blame Brexit for worsening labor shortages, which the government denies.

Aviation Minister Robert Courts said: “At the end of the day it’s a sector that’s privately run, privately owned, privately run and it’s for them to get the people they need.”

Meanwhile, easyJet has launched a helpline for children below 12 years of age facing problems at the airport.

The service will get through dedicated staff to support their families.

Guy Hobbs, editor of which? Travel, said: “We have heard from easyJet passengers who have been treated appallingly by the airline, so steps to improve its customer service are urgently needed.”
