Tech News | Google Testing SMS Message Reactions from IPhones on Default App

Washington [US]September 29 (ANI): Tech giant Google last month launched a campaign called #GetTheMessage aimed at persuading Apple to support RCS messaging on the iPhone.

According to GSMArena, Google’s efforts to improve messaging between Android and iPhone users is evident with testing the latest feature.

A Reddit user noticed that the Google Messages app is testing the ability to respond to messages sent from iPhones. When an Android user responds to an SMS from an iPhone user, they will see a message indicating that an emoji was used to respond to the message.

Basically, Google pulled an Apple. If you remember, iOS users can respond to SMS messages, which sends an SMS message to the recipient (in this case an Android phone) and passes a message of response emoji, along with the quoted message text.

Google has since made it so that its Messages app can tell which message was a response and instead show an emoji next to the message. With this new implementation, Google is pandering to iPhone users, showing them a similar text-only version of a message response, GSMArena reported.

Responding to messages with emojis is nothing new. There are plenty of cross-platform messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Skype, Teams, and Instagram, all of which support responding with emoji.

At the moment, the only market where this really matters to some people is the US, where users prefer to use the phone’s default messaging experience. For Android, it’s Google Messages with RCS and iMessage on iPhone according to GSM Arena. (ANI)
