JERUSALEM (AP) – A Palestinian man shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank died Sunday from his wounds, Palestinian officials said.

The Israeli military says troops were attacked during a routine security operation near the northwestern city of Jaba on Saturday. It said Israeli forces shot at a man suspected of throwing a firebomb and the incident is being reviewed.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has identified 19-year-old Kamel Abdullah Alwaneh near the city of Jenin and condemned his killing.

Alwaneh’s death is the latest in a series of deadly violence in the West Bank in recent months.

The Israeli military has conducted daily raids in Palestinian towns and villages in the wake of a series of deadly attacks by Palestinians that killed 19 Israelis, several of the attackers came from the Jenin area. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations.

Most of the dead were reported to have fired on Israeli forces or hurled stones or firebombs at them. At least two pedestrians were among the dead.

About 500,000 Israeli settlers live in more than 130 settlements scattered across the West Bank, along with about 3 million Palestinians who live under Israeli military rule.

In the 1967 Middle East war, Israel occupied the West Bank and the Palestinians want it as the center of a future state. Israel sees the West Bank as the biblical and historical center of the Jewish people.

Palestinians and most of the international community see Israel’s West Bank settlements as a violation of international law and an obstacle to a peaceful resolution of decades of conflict.
