KUJE, Abuja (AP) – At least 600 prisoners have escaped from a jailbreak in Nigeria’s capital city, officials said Wednesday, blamed on attacks on Islamic extremist rebels.

About 300 people have been rescued, authorities said.

According to Nigerian Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry Shuaib Belgore, “extremely determined” rebels attacked the highest prison in Abuja Kuje with “very high-quality explosives” on Tuesday night, killing a guard on duty.

Explosions and gunfire were heard in the Kuje area of Abuzar around 10pm when the assailants came and entered the jail through a hole made of explosives.

Islamic extremist insurgents who have attacked prisons have been waging an insurgency in the country’s northeast for more than a decade. Prison officials say their attack on the detention center has freed many of their members who are inmates.

“We understand they are Boko Haram. They came specifically for their co-conspirators, “Belgor said. “At the moment, we’ve rescued about 300 of the 600 who came out of prison.”

Nigeria’s jihadist rebels have carried out several jailbreaks in the country’s northeast in recent years, but this is the first in the capital city.

Nigeria’s extremist insurgency, led by Boko Haram and a branch known as the Islamic State Central African Province, has been blamed for the violence, which has killed more than 35,000 people and displaced more than 2 million, according to the United Nations. The shortage has indirectly led to the deaths of more than 300,000 people, the United Nations says

Violence by extremists in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is the most serious security challenge, with 206 million people fighting rebel herders in the northwest and a separatist movement in the south of the country.
