The Indian government on Monday warned e-commerce platforms against the illegal sale of wireless jammers, instructing the general public about the proper use of wireless jammers and boosters.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) says the use of cellular signal jammers, GPS blockers or other signal jamming devices is generally illegal, especially without government approval.
Concerned about its open online sales, the department has warned all e-commerce companies not to sell or facilitate the sale of wireless jammers on their online platforms. Private sector companies or individuals cannot collect and use jammers in India.
“It is also illegal to advertise, sell, distribute, import or otherwise market signal jamming devices in India unless permitted as per the guidelines.”
Regarding signal booster / repeater, the department states that it is illegal to own, sell and / or use mobile signal repeater / booster by any person / entity other than a licensed telecom service provider. A mobile signal booster / repeater is a type of amplifier, which is obviously used to improve the signal reception of cell phones.
However, unauthorized use of mobile phone boosters can adversely interfere, disrupting public telecommunications services by endangering the quality and coverage of such services.
This could not only cause inconvenience to mobile phone users but also impede access to emergency call services from mobile phones, creating risks to public health and safety, Dot Advisory said.
