Google Hangouts Is Shutting Down In November…And Other Small Business Tech News This Week

Here are five technology things that happened last week and how they affect your business. Did you miss them?

1 – Google Hangouts closes in November

Google announced last week that anyone using the Hangouts app would be removed from the chat immediately. People using Hangouts on the web via Gmail will have to chat later this month. Hangouts – however – will continue on the desktop site until November, and Google plans to warn those users in advance before switching. Google discontinued Google Hangouts for workspace users earlier this year. (Source: The Verge)

Why it’s important for your business:

I don’t see this as a very disruptive event. There are lots of advance warnings here and from what I can tell, redirecting chats from Hangouts is pretty non-stop.

2 – Top job-search apps reach all-time highs

According to the latest data from Aptopia, usage rates in all of the top seven job search engines have increased since March. On average, the number of daily active users last month increased by more than half (57 percent) a year. According to research, the top three apps for job search are ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn and Indeed, ZipRecruiter has seen a 37 percent increase in daily active users this year. (Source: Computer World)

Why it’s important for your business:

I guess with 11 million unfinished jobs it should come as no surprise. Great resignations continue and employees continue to take advantage of the job search platform to check what’s out there. For you, as an employer, you need to lean towards a few more popular ones. But don’t underestimate your ability to use employees and others to refer to potential employees. It remains the number one way to find business talent.

3 – OneDirectory is entering the SMB market with a new price offer for small businesses

This past week, leading software-in-service (SaaS) provider OneDirectory announced new prices for offering its employee directory for small businesses. The new small business plan costs $ 79 per month for businesses with 100 or fewer employees. OneDirectory usually serves big business. However – due to hybrid and remote work shifts – the company has begun to cater to small businesses that need access to equipment to connect their employees. (Source: PR Newswear)

Why it’s important for your business:

Even among my smallest clients, I see platforms like OneDirectory gaining popularity as a way to create employee directories, profiles and organization charts. This is a great way to share internal information about employees, especially remote employees at this time.

5-Security survives the budget ax.

New data collected by Morgan Stanley Research has found that security is a significant expense for CIOs, regardless of the potential recession. It was estimated that – in 2021 – companies have spent $ 150 billion on security products and they are expected to spend even more in the coming years. According to the CIOs surveyed, the study confirmed that security is first on the list of immunity to budget cuts. (Source: Info World)

Why it’s important for your business:

It’s important for small business owners to understand that big companies may be cutting budgets in some places, thanks to inflation and a slow economy, but IT security isn’t one of them. They realize the importance of spending the tools and people needed to protect their corporate data. So you should.
