Six people have been arrested for allegedly defrauding customers of a US IT company by posing as tech support experts, police said on Wednesday.

They are Abhishek Chhabra (31), Rahul Gupta (24), Pushkar Raj (23), Aditya Dhankar (23), Arpit Chowdhury (23) and Ashish Vaswani (25).

Police said they received information on Monday that a fake call center operating in the West Bihar area was duping US citizens on the pretext of providing technical support.

After a technical analysis, a raid was conducted and the accused operating fake call centers were found calling unsuspecting people abroad, a senior police officer said.

According to the police, the main accused Chhabra was running the call center since last month.

The accused sent pop-ups to their unsuspecting victims’ computers telling them their systems had been compromised and they should call for technical support, police said.

When the victim calls that number, it goes to a fake call center. The accused then pretended to be members of the company’s technical support support team and persuaded the victims to give them remote access to their computers. Later, they falsely told the victims that several malicious programs were found on their systems, police officials said.

They would even alert victims that their banking credentials had been compromised and immediate remedial action was required. The victims would then agree to pay whatever amount the accused demanded to settle the problem, they said.

After receiving the payment, the accused pretended to clean malware, viruses etc. from the victim’s system, police said.

They cheated the people staying in USA One crore such in the past month, police officials added.
