DoT issues advisory on usage of wireless jammer, says ‘illegal’

Wireless jammers or signal jammers intentionally jam or block authorized signals such as cellular communication, personal communication, navigational communication (GPS) by emitting powerful radio energy of similar frequencies, it says.

The use of such jammers, GPS blockers or other signal jamming devices is “generally illegal”, unless specifically approved by the center, the advisory document said.

Currently, only the States and Union Territories, the Defense Forces, the Central Police Agency and the testing agencies (models approved by the Government of India only) can collect and use jammers.

“Private sector entities and / or private individuals will not be able to collect / use jammers in India,” the consultant said.

It is also illegal to advertise, sell, distribute, import or otherwise market jammers in India.

“It is illegal for any person / entity other than a licensed telecom service to own, sell and / or use a mobile signal repeater / booster. It added.

Separately, on January 21, 2022, DoT warned all e-commerce companies not to sell wireless jammers on their online platforms, when the Center noticed that some online commerce platforms were offering wireless jammer sales benefits. Able to disrupt authorized telecom and other wireless networks.
