Amazon Launches Drones, PayPal Expands BNPL…And Other Small Business Tech News This Week

Here are five technology things that happened last week and how they affect your business. Do you miss them?

1 – Amazon’s Prime Air service will begin drone delivery in California this year.

Amazon announced last week that it would begin delivering drones to California later this year as part of Amazon’s Prime Air Service pilot program. The service will deliver thousands of different items directly to Amazon customers’ backyards in Lockford, CA who will then respond to the Prime Air service. Amazon plans to gradually scale the service to meet customer demand in other areas. (Source: Engadget)

Why it’s important for your business:

Slowly but surely, drone technology is expanding through all areas of business. For a small business you may want to consider drones to conduct real estate surveys or monitor the progress of work done over a large geographical area. I have also noticed that some of my clients have started using drones to perform security checks inside their warehouses and perform inventory cycle calculations.

2 – PayPal is expanding its BNPL offer suite with ‘Pay Monthly’ to give customers more shopping options.

PayPal has recently launched a new Buy Now Pay Letter (BNPL) offer called ‘Pay Monthly’. The new BNPL capability enables U.S. consumers to pay up to two years after a purchase. Customers will be able to access Pay Monthly directly through PayPal for better flexibility for their required or desired items and more options. (Source: ZDNet)

Why it’s important for your business:

Now in the game with Apple, many BNPL providers are looking to expand their offers – and the kind of funding they offer. Your business should offer BNPL options for your customers who want little credit, but don’t want to use a credit card.

3 – Dozens of companies and small business groups support a US bill to rein in Big Tech.

Small business groups and firms across the country are backing the U.S. bill in a bid to rein in big tech giants like Google and Amazon. Dozens of organizations sent a letter to members of Congress last week in an effort to urge them to support the bill. Companies and organizations supporting the initiative include Spotify, DuckDuckGo, Somos, Yelp, the American Booksellers Association, The Institute for Local Self-Reliance, the Chamber of Commerce and more. Why it’s important for your business:

I’m a low-government person, but even I have to admit that our biggest technology companies have too much power over our personal and professional lives. These companies are under supervision and more regulations are needed to ensure they are leaving a fair playing field for small businesses. In some cases, some giants may need a breakup. This has happened in the case of big oil and big telephones before in our history. This is probably going to happen again with big technology.

4 – The once-discussed fintech sector is facing IPO delays and consolidation.

Fintech companies have begun to scrap IPO plans and have begun to cut costs as recession concerns grow. These fears have begun to change the way investors view the market, leaving Fintech chiefs uneasy about how financial climate can affect assessments and fundraising. Many investors and executives share that rising interest rates and inflation make raising funds a challenge for fintech companies. (Source: CNBC)

Why it’s important for your business:

The fintech industry is running out of money as capital expenditures increase and financing dries up. If your business relies on a fintech platform, you need to be aware that the company behind the platform remains in business – or you may be affected. Ask, research and plan a backup.
